    Recent reforms to NSW renting laws — including the end of “no grounds” evictions and better rights for tenants with pets — have been widely welcomed, but for the growing number of people who have no option but to live in share style housing, there may be little to celebrate.

    Submission: Anti-Discrimination Act Review
    The NSW Law Reform Commission is currently undertaking a review of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1967 NSW. The Tenants' Union participated in a stakeholder consultation meeting and submitted a submission highlighting some of the key issues and barriers renters in NSW face in relation to discrimination and in taking legal action against discrimination in the rental system.

    Briefing: Residential Tenancies Amendment (Protection of Personal Information) Bill 2025
    The Residential Tenancies Amendment (Protection of Personal Information) Bill 2025 was introduced into NSW Parliament in June 2025. The Bill introduces a range of important reforms in relation to establishing protections for renters personal information, as well as several useful amendments relating to pets, information disclosure to renters and increasing penalties for offences. Overall the Tenants' Union  welcomes these reforms and recommend they be passed. In our briefing paper we have recommended some amendments to the Bill with the aim to improve outcomes and implementation, and ensure the Bill achieves its intended goals.

    New laws to protect renters privacy and improve advertising
    The Tenants’ Union of NSW welcomes the NSW Government's announcement of important changes to tenancy law in NSW which will provide better protections for renters personal information and help prevent renters applying for homes being misled when AI-generated photos are used in the advertisement. However there are a number of further improvements we do recommend for this or other bills.
