NEED HELP WITH YOUR RENTED HOUSING?

Do you need repairs done. Are you starting a new tenancy? Are you facing eviction? Do you want to leave your place? Owing rent? Living in the share house from hell?

Eastern Area Tenants Service gives people who rent their homes free advice and help. EATS is funded by NSW Fair Trading. Just follow the steps below to get help. EATS new phone intake times are: 10:00 – 1:00 pm Monday to Friday (except holidays)

Catchment
  1. Check your legal rights at tenants.org.au. Check the fact sheets and sample letters on that site. Use the search button on the right hand side of this page to see if information about your circumstances is contained on this site.
  2. Find your lease or tenancy agreement and read it to see what it says about the situation you are in. Keep a copy of your agreement handy.
  3. PRIVATE TENANTS
If you rent privately from a landlord or real estate agent, call NSW Fair Trading on 133220 for information about your legal rights and obligations.
  4. If you need advice or think you may not be able to deal with the situation you are in after you have called Fair Trading, and you live in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, call EATS for advice, referrals and more information.
  5. HOUSING NSW OR SOCIAL HOUSING TENANTS
Call EATS for advice and assistance on 9386 9147
  6. BOARDING HOUSE RESIDENTS, and SHARE HOUSING

  7. IF YOU NEED HELP WITH ENGLISH
If you are not confident in English and need translation assistance, you can contact us to arrange it or call the Telephone Interpreter Service on 131 450 and ask them to call us on 9386 9147. You should have a copy of your tenancy agreement handy.
  8. Our advice intake lines are open between 10 am and 1 pm, Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays). If you can't get through straight away, leave a message and we will get back to you as soon as we can. Once we have taken your details, we will do our best to get back to you with advice on the afternoon of the day you called us, or on the afternoon of the next day.
  9. EATS must get some details from you, such as your name and other details, before we can advise you.
  10. IF YOU WANT TO GET ADVICE MAINLY BY EMAIL
Click on the button on the bottom left hand side of this page and follow the instructions. Note that EATS will have to make a very quick verification phone call to you.
  11. EATS cannot help landlords or "head tenants" having a dispute with a tenant. NSW Fair Trading (phone 133 220) can provide advice in these circumstances.
  12. We can provide resources to help tenants stand up for their rights. In certain circumstances, such as where tenants are disadvantaged we offer more assistance to tenants. This could include help in making applications to the Consumer Trader and Tenancy Tribunal or advocacy. Click here for more information.
  13. Keep informed about developments in tenants' rights. Click here to subscribe to EATS e-newsletter or have it sent to you by normal mail.
  14. Tell us what you think about your tenancy experience by inserting your name and message in the box at right and clicking "have your say".
